SUN ON THE BEACH is a hand notated score on a single page, 3-foot by 4-foot in size, in the shape of a beach scene. "Sun on the Beach" is what the composer calls "picture notation" and is actually made of 5-line musical staves in the shape of a sunbather, sea shells, sand, clouds, sun and birds. The large musical page, revealing the musical beach scene, is mounted on foamcore on-stage facing the audience, and the instrumentalists perform facing away from the audience, so the audience can see the musical score. Two electric oscillating fans blow wind chimes at the start and finish of the work, and the Euphonium part includes spoken text taken from traditional sea shanties.

"Sun On The Beach" was commissioned and premiered by Matthew Scott Combs, Peoria, IL, 1981.
