THE LADY AOI was composed as a sparse musical soundtrack to accompany a theatrical and movement work of the same name written by Yukio Mishima. The character "Aoi" dies at the conclusion of this modern Noh drama. The sparse punctuated style of the composer on the modern quartz crystal flute evoked a bamboo shakuhachi flute used in traditional Noh.

"The Lady Aoi" was performed by the composer at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, and at Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale, IL, and commissioned by the Crazy Salad Experimental Theater of Tempe, AZ, in 1990.
